DR solutions are intended to minimize losses in the event of a datacenter catastrophe, such as a flood, a fire, an earthquake, or a cyber-attack. Events like that aren’t common, but they happen, and when they do, they can wipe out business-critical applications and huge amounts of sensitive data.
A DR solution typically involves using a secondary location to store copies of important data (such as transaction histories) and applications (such as Microsoft Exchange). To keep the backed-up data and applications as current as possible, strong DR solutions use “replication”—real-time or near-real-time copying. If the servers at the main site suffer major physical or virtual damage, the servers at the secondary site can be brought online, and the organization can conduct its business in a more or less normal fashion.
